Discover “Frédéric le lombric”, a funny and educational children's book to explore soil life and raise awareness of ecology from age 8.
Who would have thought that an earthworm could become a literary star? But that's exactly what happens to Frédéric, the mischievous earthworm imagined by Jean-Marc Pitte, journalist and scientific mediator at UniLaSalle. Aimed at children aged 8 to 10, his book offers a fun and educational dive into the heart of soil life. Illustrated by Sophie Hérout, this 59-page novel promises to arouse the curiosity of young readers.
A scientific and educational adventure
The fruit of a close collaboration with teacher-researchers from the AGHYLE research unit (Agro-ecology, Hydrogeochemistry, Environments & Resources), this book is part of a drive to raise awareness of the importance of soils and their preservation. It was also produced with the participation of Anne-Maïmiti Dulaurent, a researcher in agroecology and animal ecology at the Beauvais campus.
The story follows Solal, a child transformed into an earthworm, who meets Frédéric the earthworm. Together, they explore the mysteries of the underground and discover the key role played by earthworms in the balance of ecosystems: they aerate the soil, facilitate water infiltration and nourish plants with their excrement, considered an exceptional natural fertilizer.
As their journey unfolds, Solal also realizes that earthworms represent the largest biomass on Earth, surpassing in weight all humans and mammals combined. Like bees, they are essential to life on our planet, and their disappearance would have dramatic consequences.
A book accessible to all
