This is a first for UniLaSalle! The school will be represented at the Alliance Sorbonne Université finals of “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” on March 19 at 6 p.m. at the Jussieu Campus in Paris.
Sorosh Samiei, a first-year PhD student jointly supervised by UTC and UniLaSalle, will present his research on controlling anaerobic digestion (Interreg OBIWAN project).
Or, in other words, in terms more suited to the novice audience of “My Thesis in 180 Seconds”: Today’s dairy cows will provide tomorrow’s jet fuel!

My Thesis in 180 Seconds: A Contest to Make Science Accessible
Launched in 2008 by the University of Queensland in Australia, adopted by the University of Lorraine, and expanded since 2014 to all French-speaking countries under the leadership of the CNRS and France Universités, “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” challenges doctoral students from across France in a science communication competition. Participants have exactly 3 minutes to give a simple, clear, and concise presentation of their research, using a single slide, to an audience with no scientific background.
The competition takes place in four stages:
- A local final, held at the university level. This final will take place on March 19 for the Sorbonne Universities Alliance, of which UTC—Sorosh Samiei’s co-supervising institution—is a member.
- A regional final, organized by several universities and CNRS delegations, bringing together the winners of the various local finals. Each regional final selects 1 to 3 winners who will compete at the national level.
- A national final, a public event organized by the CNRS and France Universités. Three jury prizes will be awarded there, as well as a people’s choice award and possibly a high school students’ award. The winner of the first jury prize qualifies for the international final.
- The international final, which awards three jury prizes and one audience prize.
We all wish Sorosh good luck in this particularly demanding challenge, and we’ll see you on March 19 for the vote!
